In recent years, open access repository (OAR) has become an indispensable tool for knowledge management to provide universal access to information and knowledge in academic libraries. Open access repositories form a permanent and important part of the scholarly communication process. Their primary role is to provide open access to research literature. Open access repositories are digital collections of scholarly articles that have been self archived by their authors. Self-archiving simply means an increasing the availability of already published work by depositing their articles by the authors themselves. In developing countries, Open access repositories have potential growth trends. Presently, various Asian and European countries have contributed to the development of institutional repositories for dissemination of information. The present study gives an overview of the growth and development of OAR in Asian and European countries in the field of library and information science. The study is also based on the data gathered from open-DOAR and explores various facets of open repositories and tries to present a coherent picture of their overall development.
