Dissertation note: Undergraduate Thesis Summary: This research aims to compare and evaluate the health practices of the residents at risk in Barangay La Huerta and Vitalez, District 1, Paranaque City on Coronary Artery Disease as a basis for supplemental health promotion program. Additionally, the researchers would like to answer the following problems: What is the profile of the respondents that emerged in each high risk family in: 1.1 Barangay La Huerta; and 1.2 Barangay Vitalez in terms of: 1.1.1 age: 1.1.2 gender; 1.1.3 occupation; 1.1.4 family health history; and 1.1.5 current health status? 2. What health practices in relation to Coronary Artery Disease of the respondents of: 2.1 Barangay La Huerta; and 2.2 Barangay Vitalez in terms of: 2.1.1 diet; 2.1.2 lifestyle; and 2.1.3 level of awareness? 3. What are the health services and programs being offered by the health centers of: 3.1 La Huerta; and 3.2 Vitalez? 4. Is there a significant difference on the health practices of the respondents of Barangay La Huerta and Vitalez in relation to Coronary Artery Disease? 5. What supplemental health promotion programs can be proposed based from the findings of the study? This study is about the health practices of residents at risk of developing Coronary Artery Disease. It covers to assess individuals that were identified as high risk by the health center and were able to undergo regular blood pressure monitoring and health teaching. This employed a quantitative descriptive comparative design. The study attempted to assess the risk factors present in these barangays and how it reflects to their health practices that in time cause the disease. The respondents of the study are the individuals that emerged from high risk households of Barangay La Huerta and Vitalez, Paranaque City. Respondents to be evaluated and surveyed are the ones that consult regularly with the health center and had received health teaching regarding CAD. According to the Vitalez Health Center, out of 874 households, they have identified 180 families (rate 2.06) considered as high risk; whereas 360 families out of 1,609 households (rate= 2 23) in La Huerta were high risk as well. To be considered as a high risk household, they must have a family history of any heart disease, hypertension or Diabetes. The statistical tool was to determine the demographical profile and health practices of the respondents and the answers to the questions that was given to them. Frequency was to describe the profile of the respondents as to the following personal and demographic variables. Simple random sampling technique was utilized which is the basic sampling technique where a group of subjects (a sample) were selected for study from a larger group (a population). Each individual is chosen entirely by chance and each member of the population has an equal chance of being included in the sample. Twenty percent of the total high risk households were randomly picked from the list given by the health centers of each barangay. From that, an individual from each of the high risk families were interviewed and given questionnaires. Percentage was to determine and visualize the frequency distribution of the variables included in this study. Weighted mean was used to determine the health practices of the respondents in relation to Coronary Artery Disease. "T" is the difference between two sample means measured in terms of the standard error of those means, or "T" is a comparison between two groups means which takes into account the differences in group variation and group size of the two groups. Findings 1. Profile of the respondents in terms of: 1.1 Age a. La Huerta Highest-36-45 (31.94%) Lowest-65 and above (2.78%) b. Vitalez Highest-26-35 (36.11%) Lowest-56 and above (5.56) 1.2 Gender a. La Huerta Highest-Female (66.67%) Lowest-Male (33.33%) b. Vitalez Highest-Female (55.56%) Lowest-Male (44.44%) 1.3Occupation a. La Huerta Highest-Unemployed (36.11%) Lowest-Professional (1.39%) b. Vitalez Highest-Skilled (22.22%) Lowest-Employed (11.11%) 1.4 Family Health History a. La Huerta Highest- Hypertension (54.17%) b. Vitalez Highest-Hypertension (66.67%) Lowest-Diabetes (8.33%) 1.5 Current Health Status a. La Huerta Highest Information on where to seek consultation (1.65) Lowest-Information on treatments and medications (4.18) b. Vitalez Highest- Information on when to seek consultation (1.62) Lowest-Information on treatments and medications (4.45) 3. Significant difference between the health practices of respondents of Barangay La Huerta and Vitalez There is no significant difference between the health practices of respondents of Barangay La Huerta and Vitalez Conclusions After tabulating the questionnaires, the following conclusions were derived: 1.) It is therefore concluded that La Huerta's highest population is 36-45 or percentage of 31.94%. The most dominant gender is female which makes up 66.67%. Most of them are unemployed comprising 36.11%. to the health center right away. 4.) It is therefore concluded that the supplemental health promotion programs that can contribute are: regular consultation at the health center, health teaching thru the use of pamphlets, flyers, posters and other multi-media presentations regarding the risk factors of CAD such as regular exercise, proper diet, advise on how to manage stress, blood pressure and weight monitoring: update themselves with the latest trend regarding the management of Coronary Artery Disease; educate the public on the signs and symptoms such as chest pain, palpitation, easy fatigueability, increase in blood pressure shortness of breath, pallor, diaphoresis of CAD that will prompt for early intervention, and provide free medical missions. 5.) It is therefore concluded that La Huerta Health Center has no special programs intended for Coronary Heart Disease, However, they do free monitoring of blood pressure whenever the residents come in for consultation. Most people go to the community hospital for consultation also. Vitalez Health Center conducts daily blood pressure monitoring on people that come in for consultation. They also perform health education regarding CAD, implement no smoking and advise people to do regular exercise three times a week. Recommendations Clients. It is recommended that they should be cooperative with the programs being implemented by the health center and barangay officials. Also to reduce the risk of having CAD such as proper diet modification, having an active lifestyle, avoiding smoking, having moderate alcoholic drink and maintaining a desirable blood pressure and weight. Community. The community should be more aware on CAD risk factors and be self-conscious with their health. Researchers. The researchers should formulate appropriate programs Most of their families have a history of hypertension and most of the respondents themselves have hypertension too. In Vitalez, the highest population is 26-35 or a percentage of 36.11%. The most dominant gender is female which makes up 55.56%. Most of them are skilled workers comprising 22.22%. Most of their families have a history of hypertension for 66.67% and most of the respondents hypertensive for 83.33% 2.) It is further concluded that respondents from La Huerta are fond of eating fried foods with a mean of 4.26 value. In terms of lifestyle, they sometimes drink alcohol with a mean of 3.38. Most respondents are aware on where to seek consultation with a mean value of 1.65. On the other hand, respondents from Vitalez are fond of eating meat with a mean of 3.66 value. In terms of lifestyle, they sometimes drink alcohol with a mean of 3.36. Most respondents are aware on when to seek consultation with a mean value of 1.62. 3.) It is therefore concluded that there is no significant difference between the health practices of respondents of Barangay La Huerta and Vitalez. They only vary in consultation because the respondents from La Huerta tend to ignore the signs and symptoms even when felt while the respondents from Vitalez go that the community needs in order to reduce themselves the risk of having CAD. Academe. The academe should also join in enhancing the communities' level of awareness by educating the people through appropriate information and conduct more research in relation to prevalent diseases in the community. Future Researchers. The future researchers should conduct more research in the community depending on the prevalent disease problems that they can identify.
