Master Thesis
The objective of this study is to determine and analyze the correlation of academic achievement and the NSAT performance of fourth year high school students for school year 1999-2000, along the five subject areas such as Science & Technology, Mathematics, English, Filipino and Social Studies. Through this study, the researcher sought to answer the following specific questions. 1. What is the NSAT level of performance of the fourth year high school students in five subject areas? 2. What is the academic achievement of fourth year students in the five core subject areas in the curriculum? 3. Is there a significant relationship between the students' level of performance in the NSAT and their academic achievement in five core subject areas? 4. Is there a significant difference in the performance of male and female students in the five core subject areas of; a. NSAT scores; and, b. Academic Achievement? Methodology: The researcher made use of descriptive method of research with documentary analyses. There were 600 fourth year high school students randomly chosen, seventy-five (75) males and seventy-five (75) females with a total of one hundred fifty (150) per high school. The National Secondary Assessment Test (NSAT) results of the randomly chosen students were used as well as their final grade in five subject areas namely English, Filipino, Mathematics, Science & Technology and Araling Panlipunan or Social Studies. The statistical treatment of data was mean frequency, Pearson r, and t test. Findings: The important findings of this research were as follows: 1. The NSAT result in the five subject areas of fourth year high school students in four public high schools in the Division of Pasay were the following: a. The division mean in English was 37.02 and SD of 30.68. b. For Filipino, the division mean was 51.05 and SD of 32.08. c. The Mathematics had a mean of 44.82 and SD of 17.61. d. In Science and Technology, the division mean was 48.35 and SD of 27.59.
