Specifically, it purported to answer the following problems: 1.) What are the attitudes of the students toward Mathematics? 2.) Is there a significant difference between the attitudes of first year and second year students toward Mathematics? 3.) What is the performance of the students in the achievement test in mathematics? 4.) Is there a significant relationship between attitudes and achievement in mathematics among the first and second year students in Olivarez College? 5.) What implications can be drawn from the findings to improve the mathematics instruction in the High School Department in Olivarez College? Null Hypotheses: In the light of the primary purpose and aims of the study, the following hypotheses are posited: 1.) There is no significant difference in the attitudes of the students toward mathematics. 2.) There is no significant relationship between the attitudes and achievements in mathematics among the first and second year students. Scope and Delimitation of the Study. This study covers the relationship of student's attitudes toward mathematics and the achievement of the first and second year high school students in mathematics of Olivarez College, Parañaque City, during the school year 1998-1999. The focus in on the three areas: attitudes of students towards mathematics, achievement in mathematics and the improvement of the mathematics instruction in Olivarez College. This study included only the first and second high school students during the school year 1998-1999. It did not include the third and fourth year students for reasons that the results of the study will not be beneficial to them since the senior students are graduating. Lastly, another important limitation of the study is the adequacies of the literature and studies related to the present study.
