Master Thesis
This study aimed to identify the present needs and problems of the grade school pupils of Olivarez College in Parañaque City to come up with a more functional guidance program. This study was conducted during the 2nd semester of school year 2002-2003. More specifically, the study sought answers to the following sub- problems: 1. What are the present needs and problems of the grade school pupils as perceived from the responses of the pupils themselves, their parents and their teachers ? 2. Is there a significant difference in the perception of the grade school pupils, parents and teachers on the needs and problems of the subjects in the study? 3. What kind of guidance services are needed to help the pupils meet their needs and problems? 4. Based on the identified needs and problems of the grade school pupils, what proposal could be made for a functional guidance program? The descriptive method of research using the needs analysis was utilized in this study. A survey-questionnaire of the problems and needs of grade school pupils generated the perceptions of 108 pupils, 108 parents and 15 teachers. The statistical tools used were frequency, percentage, ranking, summation of ranks, mean and chi-square test. The null hypothesis that there is no significant difference in the needs and problems of grade school pupils as perceived by parents, teachers and the pupil themselves was rejected. The following were the significant findings: 1. In the order of their needs, the Grade School pupils represented by the grade 4, 5, and 6 identified health and physical development as their number one problem, claimed by 35% of the pupil respondents; followed by social- recreational activities identified by 21%; personal-psychological adjustment and socio-physiological relationship, both with 19% each; classroom management was the 4th problem area identified by 18% of the pupils; adjusting to school work and financial problem, each with 16%; and the problem area that affected the least number of pupil respondents was home and family adjustment with 14.56%.
