Dissertation note: Undergraduate Thesis Summary: When a child is born with a birth defect or has an illness that requires special care, that family is under additional stress. In most cases, their initial reaction of shock and disbelief gradually resolve into acceptance of the child's limitation. However, the parents' grieving may be chronic as they repeatedly see other children doing things that their child cannot and perhaps will not ever do. Their families often suffer financial hardships. Strains on the marriage of the parents relationship with their other children are inevitable under the circumstances. The outlook is not always pessimistic in there families, however, if the family learns skills to cope with the added demands imposed on it by this situation, there is potential for growth in maturity compassion and strength of character. This study utilized the descriptive type of research design which aims to illustrate the stress experienced by the mother. The researchers have 15 respondents which ages ranges from 32-74 years old. Most of the respondents are married, catholic and has reached the college level. Questionnaires containing 50 questions we made to determine the responses of the mothers according to stress and attitude. The study revealed that the stress associated with the everyday living of the mothers of mentally ill children was particularly concerning about emotional and financial difficulties. There is a significant relationship between the demographic data (educational attainment, religion and civil status) and the stress experienced by the mothers. Based from the findings and conclusion formulated in this research study, the following recommendations are hereby proposed. Mothers are advised to lessen their stress because it could affect their attitude towards their child. Mothers are recommended to attend a group therapy for them to be able to manage the stress that they are experiencing. Nursing students handling mentally ill children as patients should be able to understand the mothers' responses towards the condition of their child. The researchers encourage future researchers to conduct another study assessing the stress levels of the mother having mentally ill children who are undergoing group therapy.
