1. Title: VARSITY TEAM MANAGEMENT AT OLIVAREZ COLLEGE: A SURVEY 2. Researcher: Mr. Elmer Y. Atip 3.Name: Elmer Y. Atip Classification: Private 4. Statement of the Problem: This study sought to find out the extent of meeting the needs of the basketball and volleyball varsity team coaches and players at Olivarez College, Schoolyear 2006-2007. Specifically, it responded to the following questions: 1. What is the profile of the basketball and volleyball varsity teamrespondents as to: a. Coaches 1. gender 2. age 3. educational qualification 4. hobbies b. Players 1. gender 2. age 3. educational qualification 4. varsity team 5. hobbies 2. To what extent are the needs of the basketball and volleyball varsity team coaches and players met in the following areas of concern as perceived by the coaches and players themselves? a. finances b. selection of trainers c. training program essentials d. school site e. facilities f. provisions for safety g. equipment h. supplies i. values formation 3. How do the coaches and players differ in their perceptions of the varsity team management? 4. Is there a significant difference between the perceptions of the coaches and players along the nine areas of concern? Methodology The descriptive survey method of research was employed in this study for the primary instrument to be used for gathering data was the researcher constructed rating scale and checklist rolled into one supported by an or 41.67 percent of the players were in the basketball varsity team while twenty-eight (28) or 58.33 percent were in the volleyball varsity team. The hobbies twenty (20) or 38.46 percent of the hobby and twenty-eight or 26.92 percent had volleyball as their hobbies. 2. Varsity Team Coaches and Players Perceptions The finances of coaches and players perceived the college to be very much in providing scholarship grants and honoraria, coaches perceived the college to be much in providing allowance, incentives and monetary rewards for winning that the players perceived to be very much. The selection of trainers/coaches, coaches and players perceived the college to be much or very much in screening trainers/coaches, scouting trainers/coaches, orient trainers, coaches in various programs and activities and following the decision of the Selection Board while moderate on the job training for trainers/coaches. The training program essentials the four or 7.69 percent coaches and forty-eight (48) or 92.31 percent of the players perceived the college to be very much or much in lessening coaches' teaching loads, having a during Physical Education. Coaches perceived the college to be only moderate in providing free periods to be utilized to Physical Education activities, health examinations and awards for achievement in sports. The varsity team coaches and players had the following perceptual differences along the nine areas of concern finances -0.36, selection of trainers/coaches - 0.43, training Program Essentials -0.89, school Site 0.22, facilities 0.3, provision for Safety -0.71, equipment -0.36, supplies -0.71, value Formation -0.56. 4. There was a significant difference at .05 level of significance between the perceptions of basketball and volleyball varsity team coaches and players along (Finances), (Selection of Trainers/Coaches), (Training Program Essentials). (School Site), (Facilities), (Provision for Safety), (Equipment), (Supplies) and (Value Formation) and the hypothesis was rejected. However, between their perceptions along (Facilities), (Provision for Safety), (Equipment), thus the hypothesis was accepted. Conclusions In the light of the findings obtained in this study, the following conclusions were drawn. The profile of the coaches respondents were all male with ages for 26 to 45 years old, is the collegiate level were fond of playing basketball and volleyball. The players respondents were male and female aging 16 to 20 years old, in collegiate level and fond of playing basketball and volleyball. The perceptions of basketball and volleyball and players were providing scholarship grants, honoraria, allowance, incentives and monetary rewards was concerned much in the selection of trainers and coaches but moderate only in providing job trainings fo trainers/coaches was very much concerned with the teaching loads of the trainers and coaches but it was moderate in providing free periods to be utilized for Physical Education activities, health examines and awards for achievement in sports was very much concerned in the maintenance of school site, facilities, safety provision, equipment, supplies and value formation for the benefit of the coaches and players was providing basketball and volleyball supplies that much. was moderate in the follow-up of the value formation program conducted. Recommendations The following recommendations are base on the findings and conclusions derived from the study. The profile of the college management should recruit female coaches and should recommend organization of varsity teams in the high school department and perceptions of basketball and volleyball coaches and players should continue to provide scholarship grants, honoraria, incentives and monetary rewards should provide on-the-job training to trainers and coaches should provide free health examinations and extra awards for achievements in sports by coaches and players should continuously maintain its school site fitted or appreciate to varsity team activities or events should conduct a follow-up of value formation program given to varsity coaches/players. Further, the researcher should be certainly along these areas for their improved of the college sports program and activities.
