Language is man's best tool for communication. It stands at the center of human affairs from the most prosaic to the most profound. (Clark, 1997) It serves a very important role in the lives of human beings; it is a means by which people communicate their thoughts to their fellowmen. From the standpoint of an individual, enabling him to contribute something worthwhile to the society of which he is part. Humans must remember that they need the mastery of the English language because it is an essential part of their daily life. Being able to communicate orally, Hall (1996) says, "Human language is primarily a system or oral-aural system of signaling which points out that speech is the primary symbolization of language, while writing which the representation of speech is secondary." Without language, man will have trouble in sharing his knowledge, feelings, desires, yearnings, and dreams with other people or with a group in social situation, with one another. In the Philippines, English was made the official language when the Americans took the country from Spain. Upon the establishment of the school system, English was adopted as the medium of instruction because it is important that a common medium of communication may be established and it is obviously desirable that this medium should be the English language. Hence, the researchers having developed this awareness of the versatile characteristics of the English language formulated a study that will identify the level of speaking ability most of our senior high school students have, particularly in Olivarez College. This study aims it identify the level of speaking ability of Senior High School students of Olivarez College, SY 2003-2004, and its effect in classroom performance. Specifically, it answered the following problems. 1. Which of the speaking problems cited are prevalent to Senior High school students? a. Pronunciation b. Grammar c. Vocabulary 2. Which among the factors affect the student's inadequacy in speaking? a. Psychological factor b. Physiological factor c. Sociological factor o tota 3. What are the implications of the classroom performance in their study?
