This study aimed to report about the Nursing Assessment and intervention and its relation to psycho-social needs of surgical patient its implication to nursing education: This was conducted during the second semester school year, 2008-2009. This study aimed to answer the following questions: How do nurses assess the psychosocial needs of surgical patients in terms of Role-Relationship Pattern, Pattern of coping and stress Tolerance, Pattern of Values and Beliefs. This study used the descriptive research design which showed the role and responsibility of the respondent inside the family unit. It also pointed out the importance of family and the changes that may occur in the relationship brought about by the operation. The sub-mean score for this first pattern was 2.14, interpreted as RARELY done by nurses. The study showed that the psychosocial assessment on the respondents coping strategies and stress tolerance pattern was directed towards questions on how respondents face life problems, how they try to cope with these problems and whether there was the presence of a confidante or friends to share their problems. The sub-mean score for this was noted to be 1.64. This score was even lower than the previous pattern, but similarly interpreted as RARELY done by the nurses to the respondents The study showed the evaluated psychosocial assessment on the respondents values and belief pattern. This involved inquiries regarding the respondents' involvement in religious activities, including religious beliefs that may affect operation and the effect of their physical condition on their daily religious practices. The sub-mean score for this was 1.93 which was interpreted as RARELY done by the nurses. The over-all mean score of 1.90 showed that psychosocial assessment was RARELY done by the nurses according to the respondents responses. The study showed that the family role and relationship involved questions whether the nurse was able to show enough attention and maintain good eye contact. This resulted to a mean score of 3.74, interpreted as MOST OF THE TIME. Questions on good nursing care showing kindness scored the highest mean (4.04), also interpreted as MOST OF THE TIME. Questions whether the nurse was able to give encouragement showed a mean score of 3.09 interpreted as SOMETIMES done by numes. The total sub-mean score was 3.62, this being interpreted as MOST OF THE TIME Hence, nurses were able to do the above pattem of psychosocial interventions. The study showed the category of coping and stress tolerance pattern, the respondents responses on psychosocial intervention regarding the following nursing practices were evaluated (2.2.1) encourage talking about concerns, fears and worries; (2.2.2) listening non-judge mentally, and (2.2.3) giving advices to lessen fears. These aforementioned nursing practices had the following scores 2.65, 2.96 and 3.17, respectively. All these were interpreted as SOMETIMES done. It showed about values and beliefs involved question whether nurses show respect to religious practices. This resulted to a mean score of 3,04, interpreted as SOMETIMES done. The over-all mean score of the three patterns was 3.20, which meant that the psychosocial interventions were SOMETIMES done by the nurses. Based on the findings of the study, the researcher arrived at the following conclusion in psychosocial assessment the overall mean of 1.90 showed that respondents responses were all RARELY. In psychosocial intervention the overall mean score of the three patterns was 3.20, which meant that the psychosocial interventions were SOMETIMES done by the nurses. Holistic care was not fully delivered to the surgical patients. Psychosocial nursing assessment and intervention could help in the recovery state and reduction of anxiety level in surgical patient. Based on the results of the study the following recommendations were hereby given To the nurses, to continue upgrading their profession through attendance in continuing education program activities most especially those related to psychosocial assessment and intervention. To the hospital administrators to evaluate the extent of effectiveness and efficiency of nurses in carrying out psychosocial nursing assessment and intervention in a surgical ward to insure good patient care. To conduct in-service trainings regarding psychosocial assessment and intervention focusing especial attention on psychosocial assessment.
