Undergraduate Thesis

This study utilizes a mixed qualitative and quantitative descriptive research method. This study entitled Core Values among level IV BSN students of Olivarez College 2012-2013 sought to answer the following questions: 1) What are the expected core values to be manifested by the student in the clinical area as perceived by the nursing learders in terms of: 1.1 Love of God, 1.2 Caring as a core of nursing, 1.3 Love of people, 1.4 Love of country. 2) To what extent do BSN IV student demonstrate core values in terms of: 2.1 Love of God, 2.2 Caring as a core of nursing, 2.3 Love of people, 2.4 Love of country. The respondents are composed of 67 persons. Two (2) Chief Nurses from Medical Center of Muntinlupa and South Super Highway Medical Center, Two(2) Nursing Leaders of Saint Paul University and University of Perpetual Help System Dalta and 63 nursing students who are currently enrolled this 2nd semester of 2012-2013. Majority of this study was conducted at Olivarez College. The main instrument that was employed in this study was a survey questionnaire. This survey tools utilized through a checklist in which the Nursing Leaders and Chief Nurses of different hospital and BSN students demonstrate Core Values in terms of Love of God, Caring as a Core of Nursing, Love of People and Love of God. The continuation of the survey tool utilized focused group discussion among nursing leaders coming from the academe and nursing service of the hospital, where the group of participants is guided by a moderator (or group facilitator) who introduces topics for discussion and helps the group to participate in a lively and spontaneous discussion. The mean distribution of the respondent's Love of God, revealed that providing humane and individual approach for every client, praying before and after duty, respecting the religion, belief and tradition of the client got the average mean of 3.65 to 3.75 interpreted as "always"; providing time to the client to attend religious activities such as praying and meditation and assisting client in the prayer room got the lowest mean of 3.14 to 2.81 interpreted also as "often" respectively. The mean distribution of the respondent's Caring as a Core of Nursing, revealed that sympathizing with my patient's feelings and conditions, Planning an action to provide enough confidence for me to do the procedure in the correct manner, Safely administering medicines and other therapies, Being honest in documenting patient's data and Establishing rapport with my patient got the weighted mean of 3.59 to 3.81 interpreted as "always" The mean distribution of the respondent's as a Love of people, revealed that performs continuous monitoring of vital sign to check for improvements of deterioration, Provides comfort measure to clients like repositioning, deep breathing exercise, ect., Values the trust of the client by deferring from publicly taking about the patient's condition ensuring privacy, Developing good interpersonal relationship regarding the patient's feelings and concern and Establishing rapport to patient's by smiling, cracking jokes, and others while maintaining professionalism in the relationship got the weighted mean of 3.79 ti 3.60 interpreted as "always" The mean distribution of the respondent's Love of country, revealed that Showing tender loving care without reservation and Serving every Filipino at all times equally and professionally got a weighted mean of 3.65 to 3.59 interpreted as "always" while Abiding in community rules & regulations like jaywalking and littering. Actively participating in socio civic service like medical, surgical and dental Missions and prefer serving as a nurse here in the Philippines rather than go abroad got the lowest mean of 3.35 to 3.21 interpreted as "often". It is observed that majority of the respondents demonstrate to a high extent the Core Values of Caring as a Core of Nursing by safely administering medicines and other therapies, Being honest in documenting patient. The result shown that Core Values of Love of God is least manifested by the respondents thru respecting the client's religion, belief and tradition. While some respondents demonstrate to a very low extent the item, assisting client in the prayer room. Hence, this study will enhance on the manifestation of Core Values of nursing students by providing time to the client to attend religious activities such as praying and meditation. To motivate the Nurses to working here in the Philippines, government should consider improvement of nurses' compensation and benefits. When this happens, fresh nursing graduates would choose to stay in the country and serve their fellow Filipinos.
