Master Thesis
Reading has always been an indispensable part of our educational system from the very beginning and even up to the present. There is no doubting the fact that reading was and still is the basic foundation of our education, fundamental to learning. It is one of the learning processes by which man assimilates data to help him answer his questions and solve his problems. Strange as it may seem, however reading skills suffer severe criticisms from among the majority of our people. Authors write books about reading skills. They identify the causes of the deficiency and offer suggestions on how to improve the reading ability. Researchers also make studies on reading proficiency of students. They try to correlate reading with some independent variables. They try to look into its implications with other subject areas. This can only be interpreted to mean that reading skills appear to be wanting in many aspects, be it in the elementatry school, high school, and even in college. This statement cannot be denied because it can be observed that a great majority of pupils and students lack reading skills in the creative and critical levels of thinking. Why is this so? What happened to all the days and years of schooling? There is every reason to believe that there is something wrong with our school system particularly the teaching of readig skills among students and pupils. Something must be done to remedy this situation for the school system to be true in its vision and mission in education.
